It called out to me everyday on my way to work, like an old friend I hadn’t met yet. It was overgrown and unruly with beauty and kept saying, remember me? I made different sets of images there with my Pentax 645 between the years of 2008-2011. My young daughter and friends among them, often in costume representing the passage of time and things that change, or stay the same, from a female perspective. The orchard itself having a kind of personhood, with its wild heart and intuitive forms, telling the story of our fated existence . Some of these images were printed at 30 X 40 for the body of work entitled “ The Illustrative Portrait '' at Concepia Gallery in Friday Harbor, Wa. August 2009. A Folio of ten images from the series was created and sold in a limited edition of ten. Recently , I started going back through these negatives and am adding more to the body of work. Written about image “S in the Springtime” With the arrival of spring this year, I noticed for the first time a grove of wildly flowering trees on the side of the road on my way out to Mt. Finlayson. I watched them continue to blossom over the course of about two weeks, envisioning a portrait of my daughter among them . When her break arrived and she came home for a few days , we set out one afternoon just after the rain . One's aspiration reveals its multifarious layers once embarked upon. In turning up the road which seemed the best way to access the grove we found a garden of ancient classic cars...of all things. Totally unexpected. Many of the blossoms on the trees had fallen with the rain and so my vision of the springtime with Sonja in it became something entirely new. I chose this image to represent the shoot because of the sense of discovery I felt when I looked through my viewfinder, into the windows of this old chevy in the garden. I could see the layer of winter's empty hawthorns reflected in the weather stained windows , and the menagerie from the past in the old car another layer in between. Finally through to Sonja’s eternal gaze ... and an offshoot of yellow blossoms from the Forsythia tree nearby, a wand in her hand. This is what springtime really feels like I thought to myself . I felt like I had accidentally caught it peering out from the depths of winter , through Sonja's eyes . natural course.” It has it’s roots in botany, relating to the Latin word corōlla, meaning “a small wreath of flowers” which later grew into corōllārium, meaning “a garland given as gift or gratuity.” The meaning and origin of language in connection with the natural world and her processes, mirroring ours, holds my interest in thinking about what flowers symbolize to us. This series began in March 2020, within a universal change of pace and time spent “taking a closer look” around my neighborhood, as we Sheltered in Place in San Francisco. Adding the lived experience of subsequent years, this series aims to convey an identification with transformation, through an expressive investigation of life cycles, the natural world and my human place in it. Most people have a destination, though they look like they are waiting to see if that place actually exists. It's an expression permeated by the unknown, quietly surrendering to being human and wondering if it is heaven or hell around the corner. So much is said without uttering a word when maintaining the unspoken rules of personal space on public transportation.Sometimes people talk to each other. Perfect Strangers conversing In several different languages. Revealing their humanity. Risking vulnerability. Changing the course of the day and in the larger scheme of things, their own lives along the way. The hours spent in transit become a metaphor for your personal journey through life.Anyone witnessing this can see the beauty in everyone that boards the bus and what they bring, reflecting on what’s known and what’s unknown until it’s time to go.In 2015, I was a daily commuter on public transportation in the SF bay area. As a fellow rider I found myself in awe of the humanity, the life, loss, revelation and mystery on board everyday - through a democratic lens on culture and the body politic crowding personhood.This is a visual diary of the experience.This project has a multi media aspect developing.“If we are all equal, a bus with 200 passengers should have 200 times more road space than the Mercedes with one passenger. She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, the last of nine kids. Her first creative influence was her mother covering the dining room table with a giant sewing project and encouraging her participation. As a teen she was given "50 Poems" by E E Cummings. She filled endless notebooks with her own poems - some not bad, some quite. She was looking for a way to fuse the outer world with her inner life. This led her to the camera.Joan lived on a rural island off the coast of Washington for many years. It was here she began a more personal exploration of environment and identity, through a biophilic lens. She found metaphor in outlying landscapes, mirroring her own inner world and those of the people she photographed.
